Identity Theft Survey Report 2003 - Credit bureaus contacted. · Among Identity Theft victims, 22% said they contacted at least one Credit bureau. Of those
who contacted a Credit bureau, 25% contacted a single Credit Reporting agency, 12%
contacted two, and 57% contacted three or more agencies. (The remaining 5% said they
did not know how many Credit bureaus they contacted.) · Victims were most likely to contact a Credit bureau when a loss of $5,000 or greater was
involved (48% contacted one or more Credit bureaus) or where there were four or more
distinct misuses of the victim’s personal information (47%). · 37% of those who experienced “New Accounts & Other Frauds” Identity Theft contacted at
least one Credit bureau. However, just 13% of those who had only existing credit cards
misused contacted a Credit bureau. · The greater the values associated with the case of Identity Theft, the more likely the victim
was to contact a Credit bureau. In cases involving losses of less than $1,000, 15% made
contact, compared to 21% in thefts involving $1,000 - $5,000, and 48% when the amount
lost was $5,000 or greater.
