Family Law - Visitation. A parent who is not given custody of a child may be given visitation rights. The nature of these rights depends in part on how close the parents live to each other. For example, if the two parents live in the same city, the child may stay with the non-custodial parent every other weekend, alternate holidays, and several weeks in the summer. If the parents live far apart, the non-custodial parent may have visitation only during the child's summer vacation. If a parent has abused the child or is likely to kidnap the child, the court will probably deny or restrict visitation.
