PROTECTIVE CUSTODY

Protective custody is an action taken by a government official by placing a person in a secure setting to protect that person from harm of others.

Examples: a child placed in temporary foster care because of abuse of a parent; a wife escaping an abusive husband given a temporary shelter; protective custody to a witness to a crime that is threatened to testify in criminal court.
