Family Law - Enforcing a child Support Obligation.

Because a growing number of parents have been failing to meet child support responsibilities, the federal government and the states have strengthened laws and enforcement policies in recent years. Both federal and state governments have methods of enforcing a child support obligation. The most common method is wage garnishment. When a parent's wages are garnished, the employer automatically sends a portion of that parent's earnings to a state agency that then forwards the money to the custodial parent. In addition, liens can be placed on the parent's Property. A parent who has not paid child support can also be held in contempt of court, which may lead to imprisonment and/or fines.
