Fifty eight % of College Freshmen Support Same-Sex "Marriage"

In its annual survey of incoming college freshmen released this week, the UCLA Higher Education Research Institute reports that today's young adults are growing increasingly liberal on a range of social issues, even while their religious involvement and sense of personal health and wellness drop to all-time lows. Notably, 57.9% of freshmen now support full recognition of same-sex "Marriage," up from 56% last year and 50.9% in 1997. When asked about support for laws prohibiting homosexual relationships, only 24.9% endorsed such laws, down from 27.2% last year and a high of 50.4% in 1987.

With respect to student well-being, this year's numbers report record lows in students estimating their physical (55.2%) and emotional (53.4%) well-being as "above average" or better. 15.8% of this year's freshmen reported no religious affiliation, while fewer than one in three students self-rated themselves as being "above average" in levels of "religiousness."

The data for this year's survey was collected prior to September 11, leading analysts to speculate how the terrorists attacks and subsequent war on terrorism will impact America's students.
