ABOUT 40 PERCENT OF FOOD STAMP MOTHERS NEVER MARRIED.

In 1993, about 40 percent--2.1 million of the nation's 5.3 million mothers receiving food stamps--had never been married, according to a study released today by the Commerce Department's Census Bureau.

And these never-married mothers between the ages of 15 and 44 years old had an average of 2.3 children each, the bureau said in a statistical brief titled "Mothers Who Receive Food Stamps -- Fertility and Socioeconomic Characteristics," SB/95-22.

Overall, about 5.3 million mothers 15 to 44 years old reported receiving food stamps. On average, these women had about 2.6 children each. Mothers not on food stamps had an average 2.1 children each.

The Census Bureau's data were collected in the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) between June and September 1993.
