16 Briefs Filed in Favor of Marriage in Massachusetts.
On December 20, the Massachusetts Attorney General's office filed its brief in defense of Massachusetts Marriage laws with the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. Supporting the Commonwealth's arguments in _Goodridge v. Department of Public Health_ were 15 "friend of the court" briefs.
Over 75 individuals and organizations joined in filing these briefs, forming a diverse coalition representing a broad range of political, religious and professional backgrounds. The amicus parties included family law professors, constitutional experts, sociologists, psychologists, state legislators, state attorneys general, pro-family groups, and various clergy and religious organizations.
This broad support for Marriage came in response to Boston-based Gay Lesbian Advocates and Defenders' lawsuit demanding the Marriage laws be changed for homosexuals to marry individuals of the same sex. The trial court ruled in favor of the State on May 7 of 2002, holding that recognizing Marriage as a male-female union was rationally related to legitimate state interests, and that same-sex couples did not have constitutional claims to Marriage recognition.
Oral arguments in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health are scheduled to be heard at the Supreme Judicial Court in early March. - January 10, 2003
