ALI Issues “Principles of Family Dissolution”.
A recent New York Times story has highlighted some recent recommendations from the American Law Institute's Family Law Section. Among many deeply troubling recommendations, the ALI has proposed creating a new category of domestic partnerships which will be accorded the same recognition as Married Couples on the breakup of the relationship. Domestic partners may be same or opposite sex couples who are unmarried. A brief backgrounder from the Marriage Law Project describes the ALI's recommendations and lists resources that might be helpful in responding to them.
Due to the prominence of the ALI, some state legislatures might feel pressure to adopt their radical new proposals. There are powerful arguments against doing so and we want to (1) make legislators aware of them and (2) alert legislators to the possibility of help if they are faced with the possibility that their state may consider these things.
If you feel it would be of use to your local legislators, we would urge you to feel free to share the Marriage Law Project's backgrounder on the “Principles of Family Dissolution” with them.
