100,000 in Massachusetts Support Marriage. Despite harassment from homosexual advocacy groups attempting to keep the issue of Marriage out of the hands of voters, Massachusetts Citizens for Marriage has gathered over 100,000 signatures on its initiative petition for a constitutional amendment to protect Marriage as a male-female union. As of 4:15pm this afternoon, at least 78,171 signatures had already been certified in municipalities across the state, a number well in excess of the 57,100 certified signatures required by law. Bryan Rudnick, with Massachusetts Citizens for Marriage stated, "The people want the opportunity to vote on this issue rather than have activist judges and Lawyers decide such an important issue on their behalf." Rudnick continued, "Even our opposition knows that the people will only support Marriage as the union of one man and one woman." The Massachusetts Protection of Marriage Amendment is just another step in Massachusetts’ long history of constitution-making and government by the people. Massachusetts was the first American state to have its constitution approved by a statewide vote of the people, and its constitution was used a pattern for the U.S. Constitution, being drafted in large part by John Adams. The Massachusetts Protection of Marriage Amendment follows in this tradition by placing important issues before the people for their vote, rather than having laws created without approval of the people or their elected representatives. After town clerks finish certifying the validity of the remaining petition signatures, the signatures from each municipality will then be brought for final approval to the State Ballot Law Commission for certification on December 5. If the requisite 57,100 signatures receive final certification, the Massachusetts Protection of Marriage Amendment will then move to the Massachusetts legislature for at least 25% approval in each of the next two legislative sessions.
